Remember Memorex, the cassette tape so accurate that it begged the famous question “Is it live or is it Memorex?” Well it seems that you can now ask the same question about your next corporate event.
OK, so I’m getting bored with this subject too, but people keep talking about it.
It seems the corporate events business is running scared. In fact, I’ve gotten requests from two different colleagues in the last few days asking me to sign petitions to save the meeting industry as we know it. The blogosphere, meanwhile, remains abuzz about the rise of virtual meetings, and my standing Google Alerts search for these and other like keywords, keeps turning up more tidbits like this one.
Viritx.com is the first virtual ICT exhibition and conference to be hosted in Dubai. Being virtual, it’s not really taking place in the UAE, it’s taking place in cyberspace, which means you get to stay home rather than jet off to an exotic desert locale. It runs for three days complete with exhibit halls, booths, conference center, media center and more. Everything you would expect to find at a live event. It’s also available on demand for five months after the event is officially over. With the huge savings in travel and resources versus live shows, it’s easy to see why my colleagues are resorting to ‘Save The Whale” type petitions.
I think we’ll still be here when the cyberdust settles because I just can’t see a business environment where there is no value in meeting one on one, or one on many, with my fellow humans. The future will likely be a hybrid of both the live and the virtual with the best elements of each holding sway.

Nice and concise and you couldn’t be more right. Beautiful picture, too.
The future will likely be a hybrid of both the live and the virtual with the best elements of each holding sway. – I just hope it’s not a hybrid with the worst elements of each holding sway.
Meetings, meetings, meetings. Virtual or real I seem to attend my share every week, and I greatly prefer the live variety. Thank you for the interesting info and links. Great photo!
